Activism

Fri Apr 25, 2008, 11:24 AM
I woke up on Wednesday hoping to see a ton of free stuff outside of the union because this week is Spring Jam. Yay right? Instead there were a bunch of people who had up a ton of Anti-Choice propaganda.

There were pictures of aborted fetuses next to images of the Nazis, the KKK, people who had been lynched, victims of the Holocaust, victims of the Cambodian genocide, and many more horrific images. These people called their display a "Genocide Awareness Project."

A genocide is a systematic and deliberate extermination of a group of people based on their race, religion, or political status.

As far as I am concerned, having an abortion is one person's decision about their life and is in no way a genocide. Needless to say, I took pictures.

No matter what side of the abortion issue you are on, I believe that calling it a genocide is highly offensive and the images that were used were purely for shock value.

When I saw that these people were still outside on Thursday, I decided that it would be a good use of my time and effort to protest their protest. So I made a couple of big signs and just stood there. I made sure I was within my rights an stayed off of their reserved land of course first, but I just stood there. With my sign.

It said, "This is not Genocide" the other one said, "This display is offensive."

I didn't yell things at people, I didn't try to grab anyone's attention. If they asked me a question I answered. If someone tried to argue with me, I let them. I got yelled at by one man. Someone walking past called me "fag."

But for the most part, I got smiles. I got smiles and thumbs up and nods. And I also got about two dozen "thank you"s. People came up just to shake my hand to let me know that they appreciated that someone was protesting. One woman bought me food because I'd been standing in the rain for 3 hours. Those people made it worth it.

That is sick. I hate it when people do things like that.
Why can't people just allow people around them to make their own choices. Life would be so much easier if people stopped meddling in the lives of complete strangers.

Do at least one thing every day that scares you half to death.
Well technically I was meddling by protesting them I guess. But one of the things that really bothered me about the display was that you couldn't get away from it. No matter where you were you had to look at it.

I agree with you. Here in Italy recently there were political elections and there was an anti-abortion party which was rather disagreeable like your photos. Fortunately it reached no place in our parliament.

Thank you very much for this comment. :) Also, this hasn't reached our government and I don't believe it will.

I don't know if I could personally choose to have an abortion, but if other people want to...

we're very overpopulated. there needs to be less of us. at this point, we're hurting ourselves by making more people.

also, I think what you did was wonderful. it is pretty gross when people need to offend other people like that. I don't know why people can't just live and be happy with whatever other people decide. everyone thinks they're so right that other people should think the way they do too. *sigh*

 you're awesome.
